Charting is a web-based knowledge management tool that can be used by users to curate information they come across during their online searches. While browsing online, or reading documents on their computer, users can apply the Charting tool to highlight text that interests them and associate it with any of their stored goals (headings of their choosing). The selected text is sent as a message to the Charting server and stored under their chosen goal. If users no longer require certain goals, the collected information can be retained and shared with other users. To use the application, you can sign up with an account on the website.
Business: MHN supported the client in a product development role, initially holding in-depth consultations to determine the pros and cons of developing a product out of the theoretical concepts surrounding goal based learning. The discussions were also used to discern the client's needs and product specifications. MHN also advised the client in what ways they could achieve their desired outcome, as well as discussing benefits and limitations of the technologies that could be used. Finally, once the specification was established and signed off on, the MHN team delivered the end product in a timely fashion, resulting in a free web application accessible to all and further research opportunities for the client.
Technology: MHN examined the design of a knowledge capture and display Meta UI which can be embedded into multiple existing applications and operating systems using the Charting Paradigm. The company developed plug-ins capable of taking user notes and uploading them to the Charting server with associated goals. The information stored within the Charting system consists of richly linked users, goals, notes and sources. A graph visualisation of this data was created to provide a more intuitive navigation of this dataset and was integrated into the existing Charting site, providing each user with a personalised visualisation of their goals and notes.
